SHAH ALAM, Feb 21 — State executive councillor for Islam and innovation Dr Fahmi Ngah has strongly cautioned against attempts to portray mosques as unsafe or prone to criminal activities following a recent incident at a mosque in Selangor.

He stated that painting a negative perception against mosques is disrespectful and unacceptable to the Muslim community in Selangor.

Fahmi was responding to an incident that went viral on social media alleging an attempted assault on a young girl in the women’s prayer section of Masjid Jamek Sungai Masin in Batang Kali.

“I have referred this report to the Selangor Police Chief for further investigation, including reviewing CCTV (closed-circuit television) footage and images provided.

“If the allegations are true, swift action must be taken against the perpetrator under the relevant legal provisions,” he said in a statement today.

Fahmi also urged mosque visitors to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities immediately.

The incident gained attention after CCTV footage surfaced online showing a man entering the women’s prayer area, seizing the victim from behind, and attempting to remove her from the mosque forcibly.

At the time, the young girl was praying alone in the row behind other female worshippers, who were unaware of the situation as they were in prostration.

According to Malay daily Berita Harian, additional footage allegedly showed the suspect struggling with the victim and attempting inappropriate physical contact before fleeing when she fought back.

Hulu Selangor District Police Chief Superintendent Ahmad Faizal Tahrim told the Malay daily that an official statement on the case would be issued soon.
