SHAH ALAM, Feb 19 — The Kita Selangor Rail project is expected to take 10 years to complete, with a 200km network set to improve connectivity between the state’s northern and southern regions.
State executive councillor for investment, trade and mobility Ng Sze Han said the proposed rail link will span Sabak Bernam, Shah Alam, Klang and Sepang before reaching Labu in Negeri Sembilan.
During the tabling of the 2025 Selangor State Budget on November 15, last year, Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said the Kita Selangor Rail Line is set to extend beyond the state’s borders and into Negeri Sembilan, with spur lines connecting key locations like Westport and Klang.
“To date, studies have identified a 200km main alignment, with four proposed spur lines connecting to Westport, Klang, Putra Heights, and Universiti Selangor in Bestari Jaya.
“The rail system is designed to support speeds of up to 160km/h, significantly reducing travel times between key destinations.
“For example, a journey from Sabak Bernam to Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) via the (Kita) Selangor Rail is projected to take approximately one hour and 42 minutes, compared to the current two hours and 41 minutes by road,” Ng told the Selangor State Legislative assembly in response to a question from Bukit Gasing assemblyman Rajiv Rishyakaran about the details of the project.
Ng said the project will strengthen Selangor’s rail ecosystem by accommodating both passenger and freight services.
He said the rail network is expected to enhance Selangor’s connectivity by linking major transportation and logistics hubs, including Port Klang, KLIA, and Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport in Subang.
“The development of this rail alignment is expected to help integrate the local economy with larger metropolitan areas, boost trade, industrial and business growth, and improve market access,” he said, adding that it would also complement existing public transport systems in the Klang Valley, including the MRT, LRT, KTM Komuter, and KLIA Ekspres.
Ng said the state administration is conducting further studies on the project’s alignment, financing, and implementation.
He added that it will also improve its bus services to complement the rail network.
The state’s proposed rail network was first unveiled during the launch of Tawaran Kita Selangor by Pakatan Harapan and Barisan Nasional on July 31, 2023, in which Amirudin presented the pledge to create Jajaran Kita Selangor to connect rail services in Klang to Kuala Selangor, Tanjong Karang, and Sabak Bernam.
Tawaran Kita Selangor was the Unity Government’s election manifesto for the 2023 Selangor polls.
