SHAH ALAM, Feb 19 — State executive councillor for youth, sports and entrepreneurship Mohd Najwan Halimi has welcomed TV3’s apology over the 39th Anugerah Juara Lagu (AJL39) awards show controversy while reiterating his concerns about moral standards in entertainment events.
The Kota Anggerik state assemblyman said the issue has offended many, particularly the Malay and Muslim communities, and called on all agencies, particularly religious authorities and media outlets, to take a firm stance in preventing the spread of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) ideology and culture.
“I appreciate the apology @tv3malaysia issued regarding this matter, which has offended many, particularly the Malay and Muslim communities.
“The deviant LGBT ideology and culture must be eradicated and should not be allowed to spread in this country.
“It is crucial for every agency, especially religious authorities and media outlets, to play their role in curbing its spread and blocking any efforts to normalise this repugnant ideology and culture,” said Najwan in his latest social media post, adding that the LGBT movement, which has gained traction in Western nations, has caused significant harm to society and family structures.
Najwan’s remarks followed the incident of a male audience member who cross-dressed during AJL39, which was broadcast live on Sunday.
He then criticised AJL39, questioning whether the music awards show was attempting to normalise LGBT culture in Malaysia.
Yesterday, AJL39 broadcaster TV3 apologised for the incident, stressing that it is committed to complying with local laws and government guidelines.
In addressing the matter, Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said yesterday that the federal government would take firm action against any television station that violates established guidelines.
Islamic Development Department (Jakim) director-general Datuk Sirajuddin Suhaimee on Monday said immediate action would be taken, and that Jakim would summon relevant parties for clarification and hold a closed-door discussion to provide guidance and advice.
AJL39 was held on Sunday at Axiata Arena Bukit Jalil, featuring performances from 10 finalists, including Marsha Milan with Hening Rindu, Akim & The Majistret with Saksama, and Hael Husaini with Diam, among others.
