SHAH ALAM, Feb 15 — Events to be contested at the 22nd Malaysian Games (Sukma) in Selangor next year will be finalised after the Sukma supreme council meeting on February 26, said state executive councillor for youth, sports and entrepreneurship Mohd Najwan Halimi.

He said the meeting, to be chaired by Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh, will be joined by all executive councillors for sports from states involved in Sukma.

“For now, Selangor as the host has decided to join 28 core events, but we do not want there to be an advantage only for us, but for all competing states.

“For example, Selangor has facilities for pickleball, but other states don’t, so we will decide at the meeting which events to contest,” he said when met at the launch of a restaurant in Seksyen 7 here today.

Najwan added that over 2,000 Selangor Youth Movement (PeBS) members could be appointed Sukma volunteers.

“Since last year, PeBS has implemented various grassroots programmes involving youth, and I will talk to the 22nd Selangor Sukma Secretariat to involve them as volunteers.

“We (want to involve) over 2,000 members, and all will be mobilised as volunteers. We want youth to be involved in the Selangor Sukma next year,” he said.

The 21st Sukma, which was held in Sarawak from August 17 to 24 last year, saw Selangor finish third overall with 56 gold, 64 silver and 61 bronze medals.

On August 3, Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari announced incentives of up to RM10,000 for Selangor athletes who won gold.

A reward of RM10,000 was given to individual athletes, RM5,000 per athlete for team events with fewer than five members, and RM3,000 per athlete for team events with more than five people — a threefold increase from the 2022 edition.
