Six schools in Shah Alam receive IBS classrooms to expand learning spaces

SHAH ALAM, Feb 12 — Six schools in Shah Alam are provided with Industrial Building System (IBS) cabin classrooms to support classroom expansion and create a conducive learning environment.

The schools are Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Seksyen 7, SK Seksyen 19, SK Setia Alam, Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Seksyen 7, SMK Seksyen 16, and SMK Alam Megah.

Acknowledging the issue of overcrowded classrooms, Education Deputy Minister Wong Kah Wong said RM100 million has been allocated for 2025 to implement the IBS classrooms nationwide.

“The Education Ministry is aware of overcrowding in certain schools. As outlined in the 2024 building planning regulations and guidelines published by the Economy Ministry, the standard classroom capacity is set at 30 students.

“This guideline takes into account factors such as workspace, desk-to-window distance, and teacher movement.

“However, the capacity may be increased to 35 students under specific conditions. To address this, the ministry has implemented several strategies, including building new schools and expanding existing ones,” he said in response to Shah Alam MP Azli Yusof during Question Time at Dewan Rakyat, today.

In his supplementary question, Azli raised concerns about overcrowded classrooms, which can reach up to 50 students due to new developments in certain areas.

He asked how the government plans to address this issue while ensuring access to education and a conducive learning environment.

In response, Wong said that MOE is also building new schools and adding classrooms to existing ones, considering factors like classroom capacity, population density, and available land.

He added that as announced in Budget 2025, the construction of 44 new schools this year has been approved, compared to 26 last year and 19 in both 2023 and 2022.
