KUALA KUBU BHARU, Feb 10 — Theme park operators in Selangor have been reminded to comply with the standard operating procedures (SOPs) set by authorities to ensure visitor safety remains a top priority.
State executive councillor for local government and tourism Dato’ Ng Suee Lim said that no theme park is exempted from regulations and cited the recent incident at i-City as an example.
“I want to remind all theme park operators not to neglect safety and to strictly follow the SOPs set by local authorities.
“We do not want unwanted incidents to occur, only for everyone to later blame the local councils. This matter must be taken seriously,” he told reporters when met after launching the 2025 Joran Festival at Tasik Fraser Valley here, yesterday.
Also present was Tourism Selangor chief executive officer Chua Yee Ling also.
Commenting further, Ng said the glass water slide attraction at i-City will not be allowed to operate until the required official documents are submitted.
He said the state government has not set a specific timeframe, as approval depends on the operators’ efforts to submit documents, including planning permission and a building permit.
“It’s up to them. As long as they do not submit the documents, we will not allow them to operate. If they are willing to bear the losses, that is their decision,” he added.
Previously, an 18-second video went viral showing an incident in which a float from the 60-meter-high, 600-meter-long glass water slide at Menara SkyCity, i-City, fell and struck visitors.
The incident raised public concerns about the safety of attractions at the theme park.
On January 31, the Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) said it had issued eight notices to the theme park in Section 7 since November 14, 2024, following i-City’s decision to continue operating the glass water slide.
MBSA also expressed disappointment over i-City’s failure to comply with regulations despite multiple warning notices being issued.
