SHAH ALAM, Feb 2 — The Selangor Water Management Authority (Luas) took immediate mitigation measures to prevent pollution in Sungai Bernam, Behrang, from impacting nearby water treatment plants (WTP) after a lorry crashed into the river earlier today.
In a Facebook post, Luas said it was notified of the incident at 1pm today and promptly activated Code Yellow, in line with its water source pollution emergency manual, to carry out a thorough probe and take prompt actions.
It said the incident has the potential to impact the Sungai Selisek WTP and Bernam River Headwork WTP, which are located 3.2km and 31.5 km away, respectively.
“Upon arriving at the scene, our team found that a lorry, whose owner has yet to be identified, is suspected to have skidded into Sungai Bernam, causing an oil spill along a 100-metre stretch of the river.
“Luas immediately activated static monitoring at the Bernam River Headwork WTP and placed an oil boom at the plant’s intake point.
“Luas also oversaw the removal of the vehicle from the river, which was fully completed by 5.15pm,” it said.
The state agency added that it is closely monitoring the current river conditions and remains on high alert for any further developments.
