SHAH ALAM, Feb 2 — The Selangor Future Cup is a crucial platform for discovering new talent among secondary school students to strengthen the state’s esports industry.
State executive councillor for sports Mohd Najwan Halimi said the tournament aims to expand the pool of emerging talents to build a more competitive Selangor esports team.
“We know that Selangor Red Giants (SRG) is strong, with talented players and a solid reputation. However, we cannot rely solely on existing talents. The Selangor Future Cup is designed to identify new ones.
“We are collaborating with 84 secondary schools to scout students with potential, nurture their skills, and eventually integrate them into Selangor’s esports team,” he said at the Kota Anggerik state assembly Health Carnival at Surau Al-Ansor, Seksyen 2, here today.
Previously, Selangor State Sports Council (MSN) executive director Mohamad Nizam Marjugi announced that the state government, in collaboration with MSN, would introduce the Selangor Future Cup to further boost e-sports activities among students.
He said the tournament would involve secondary school students and be conducted in partnership with schools.
In July 2024, SRG made history in Malaysia’s e-sports scene by winning the Mid Season Cup Mobile Legends Bang Bang (MLBB) 2024 in Saudi Arabia.
SRG secured a 4-3 victory over the Philippines’ Falcons AP Bren Sport, clinching the championship title and taking home a prize of RM4.6 million.
During the tabling of the Selangor Budget 2025, Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari announced that the state government would refurbish Hotel Carlton in Seksyen 13, here, into an e-sports hub with an allocation of RM1 million.
He said the initiative would allow Selangor to host esports tournaments at the Asean and international levels.
