State looks to tighten safety procedures after i-City accident

SHAH ALAM, Jan 31 — State executive councillor for local government and tourism Dato’ Ng Suee Lim today said Selangor will step up monitoring and tighten safety conditions for all entertainment premises in the state.

In a statement today, Ng said this is to prevent recurrences of a recent incident at the i-City theme park, where an inflatable tube fell off the SkyCity glass slide and hit a woman, injuring her.

“To ensure the well-being and safety of visitors are always prioritised, local authorities will review approval procedures and strengthen enforcement so every theme park in the state operates by the book.

“The Selangor government is committed to boosting safety standards and recreational industry (rule) adherence, and ensuring a safe and fun experience for all visitors. We also urge all theme and entertainment park operators to always follow the rules,” he said.

Initial investigations by the Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) had revealed the glass slide at the i-City theme park had not received full approval to operate.

Previously, the council said it had issued i-City with six notices and follow-up orders from three site visits in November and December to ensure the theme park adhered to all planning and safety procedures before operating the glass slide, to no avail.

MBSA issued a stop-work order to i-City yesterday until it obtains all necessary approvals.

As a follow-up, the state government, through the MBSA, held talks with i-City management to ensure all approvals can be gained.

Meanwhile, an i-City spokesman in a statement said visitors who bought tickets to its Sky i-City tower can exchange them to access other i-City attractions or receive a full refund by contacting 03-5521 8800.

The spokesman said Sky i-City supports the Visit Selangor Year 2025 and Visit Malaysia 2026 campaigns by showcasing Selangor as a premier tourist destination, and is working towards resuming operation soon.
