SHAH ALAM, Jan 31 — The Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) will take firm action against i-City for failing to comply with an order to cease operations of its glass water slide, SkyCity Tower.
This follows a recent incident where an inflatable tube fell off the ride and hit visitors.
MBSA’s Corporate and Public Relations Department director Mohd Azhar Mohd Sharif said the council had issued a stop-operation notice and a fine on November 14, 2024.
“We (MBSA) have issued a second fine after i-City failed to comply with the initial order to cease operations.
“MBSA’s Building and Enforcement Department will inspect the site and take strict action, as such incidents involve public safety,” he told Media Selangor.
A viral 18-second video showing an inflatable tube on the 60-metre-high, 600-metre-long glass water slide at i-City appearing to fall off the ride recently sparked public concern.
The incident raised fears over visitor safety, as well as rides at the theme park.
SkyCity Tower, which was built at a RM15 million cost, is Malaysia’s tallest glass water slide.
Meanwhile, Shah Alam MP Azli Yusof has voiced his concern over the safety of the attraction, urging MBSA to take a firm stance on the matter.
He said that while the structure appears impressive and could attract more visitors to the theme park, it must meet rigorous safety standards.
“I share the same concerns raised by many netizens over the past few days. Typically, structures like this require high design and construction standards, along with thorough inspections," he said in a post on X yesterday.
“I have contacted MBSA to inquire whether the SkyCity Tower at i-City has received approval to operate.
“Has it undergone proper inspections and received clearance from the Occupational Safety and Health Department?” he questioned, adding that he does not want any unforeseen accidents to occur due to negligence.
