SHAH ALAM, Jan 24 — Lembaga Zakat Selangor (LZS) is expecting to provide aid to 94,000 hardcore poor families this year, said its chairman Tan Sri Syed Anwar Jamalullail.

It also plans to reduce the number of people who require zakat aid, and aims to mark off 4,500 individuals from the list.

Syed Anwar said LZS is dedicated to providing guidance to those who will soon be taken off the list, and wants them to be able to be independent and not have to rely on continuous help.

Last year, nearly 80,000 impoverished families and also 5,000 Muslim converts received zakat aid, while around 4,000 people were taken off the aid list.

“This is proof that the programmes that we provide to the needy, like business training, and job and education fairs, really work,” Syed Anwar said.

He was speaking at an event to launch Menara Zakat Sultan Idris Shah by the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj, yesterday.

Syed Anwar added that in the 30 years of its existence, starting from 1994, LZS has contributed some RM11 billion in zakat aid to as many as 350,000 individuals.

“LZS has always been the main pillar of support for the downtrodden. Since the day we were first established, we have been providing sincere and undivided care to Muslims in need in order to give them a better life,” he added.
