KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 19 — All flood evacuees in Terengganu have gone home, while the situation in Sabah improves and Sarawak residents battle flash floods.
Terengganu
The Bandar Paka JPKK community hall temporary relief centre (PPS) shut at 8pm tonight, marking the end of floods due to high tides of over 3m since January 11.
The State Disaster Management Committee in a statement said all 299 evacuees from 78 families at PPS, including the Kuala Kemaman multipurpose hall and Kampung Geliga Pantai community hall, went home today.
“The high tides and waves caused significant damage to the homes of five families in Kemaman and 14 families in Dungun,” read the statement.
It added that several business owners in Kuala Nerus faced losses of tens of thousands of ringgit as the waves severely damaged their shops.
It revealed that critical erosion, particularly in Kampung Tanjung and Mengabang Telipot, led to the closure of coastal roads, while businesses were forced to halt operations for safety reasons.
Sabah
The state Civil Defence Force said in a statement that the number of flood victims dropped from 1,054 victims from 355 families this morning to 877 victims (328 families), with all of them housed at six PPS in Pitas and Paitan.
The Pitas Disaster Management Committee chairman said four PPS in the district were shut as floodwaters recede in the area.
Sarawak
A PPS in Saratok has been opened following flash floods in the southern and central divisions of the state.
According to the State Disaster Management Committee, the PPS at Dewan Rumah Dayak Saratok is sheltering 39 flood victims from 15 families from Rumah Tembawai Kapok.
Two villages were also hit — Kampung Kuala Lama and Kampung Petanak Ulu — in Mukah in central Sarawak. However, the water level is reportedly receding.
