KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 12 — Over 4,000 Tamil residents in Sungai Buloh received Ponggal kits today in conjunction with the upcoming harvest festival, which will be celebrated nationwide on Tuesday.
Sungai Buloh MP Datuk Seri R. Ramanan said the Ponggal kits were distributed to B40 residents in his constituency under the Magilchi Ponggal programme, which has been held for the past two years.
“The Indian community in Malaysia will welcome the month of Thai this Tuesday, marking a fresh start. I take this opportunity to wish everyone a happy Ponggal and hope this festival brings prosperity, well-being, and happiness,” he said in a statement today.
The programme was organised jointly by the Sungai Buloh People’s Welfare Association and community leaders from Gugusan Kantan, Kekwa, Kemboja, Tanjung, and Cempaka Apartments, in collaboration with the Sungai Buloh parliamentary service centre.
Ramanan, who is also the Deputy Entrepreneur and Cooperatives Development Minister, expressed hope that the Indian community in Malaysia would embrace this harvest festival to forge new paths toward greater progress and success.
“Celebrate Ponggal with joy and positivity. A strong spirit of confidence will certainly pave the way for success. The Indian community must remain united, as unity is key to unlocking greater achievements and opportunities,” he said.
He called on all Malaysians to strengthen unity and mutual understanding, in line with the Madani vision under the leadership of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Ramanan, who is responsible for overseeing Indian community affairs, also announced plans to deliver good news for the Indian community on Tuesday during the Ponggal celebration. This is part of the government’s efforts to uplift the community’s economic prospects.
“The Madani government is firmly committed to fulfilling the aspirations of the Indian community as demonstrated by the seven initiatives rolled out in 2024 under the Entrepreneur and Cooperatives Development Ministry,” he added.
