Stray animals: Selangor looks to instate no-kill policy

By Fitri Hazim Hazam

KUALA LANGAT, Jan 7 — The state government is looking to establish a no-kill policy to protect stray animals in Selangor.

State executive councillor for local government and tourism Dato’ Ng Suee Lim said every dog captured will be sent to the respective local authority’s temporary detention centre for neutering and vaccination.

Ng added that his office is prepared to fund the programme, which involves local authorities and non-governmental organisations.

“The Petaling Jaya City Council has answered the call to pioneer the implementation of this policy, but it needs much funding.

“On my side, we are ready to set aside allocations between RM100,000 and RM200,000, while the rest (of the cost) will be borne by the local authorities,” he told reporters after the launch of a workshop to standardise local authorities’ best practices at Amverton Cove Golf and Island Resort here yesterday.

Ng said the policy also focuses on issuing licences to dog owners on the condition that they ensure their pets are neutered and vaccinated.

“The programme aims to raise awareness among dog owners to ensure their pets do not roam where the people’s well-being could be compromised,” he said.
