State pursues developer over compensation for Taman Seri Alam flood victims

SHAH ALAM, Jan 5 — Follow-up discussions will be held with the developer of the water retention pond next to the residential area in Taman Seri Alam, Saujana Utama, to ensure that the 200 residents affected by the recent bund’s collapse will receive the compensation promised to them.

The coordinator for the Paya Jaras state constituency, Mohd Khairuddin Othman, said no resolution has been reached so far, as the discussion initially scheduled for last Thursday was postponed.

“As of now, we haven’t received a new date from the developer, but we will pursue this matter until resolved, as directed by the state government,” he said when contacted.

“The meeting was supposed to take place on Thursday, but the developer requested more time. We’ll monitor the situation next week, take follow-up actions, and assist residents with the necessary support.”

Meanwhile, Khairuddin also urged the state government to review the planning permissions granted for housing projects to prevent similar incidents from recurring.

“Flooding caused by developers is not the first or last time and has happened far too often. While new projects might be good, they sometimes negatively impact older housing areas,” he stated.

Mohd Khairuddin also stated that efforts are underway to seek assistance from various agencies, including the Social Welfare Department and zakat institutions, to ease the residents’ burdens.

On December 29, the collapse of the bund caused flooding in the surrounding residential areas. However, no injuries or fatalities were reported.

This marks the second time such an incident has occurred, with the latest being worse than the one in December 2015 that caused a flash flood.

Following the incident, Menteri Besar Selangor (Incorporated), or MBI, through Yayasan MBI, donated 300 food baskets to affected residents.

Health Minister and Kuala Selangor MP Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad also visited the affected area yesterday and provided additional support.
