SHAH ALAM, Dec 30 — Sabak Bernam recorded the highest wakaf (endowment) land registration in Selangor last year, with 14.2ha.
Selangor Wakaf Corporation (PWS) chief executive officer Anuar Hamzah Tohar said this formed part of the total 28.8ha of wakaf land registered under the name of the Selangor Islamic Religious Council across the state’s nine districts.
“This indicates people are becoming increasingly aware of the importance of wakaf, as most of these lands are being utilised to benefit Muslims and the community as a whole.
“In general, wakaf properties with a total value of RM36.2 million are being maximised through leasing or development for agriculture and other purposes,” he said in a press conference today.
Meanwhile, Anuar Hamzah said PWS has distributed RM2.4 million in fisabilillah wakaf funds to 69 institutions this year, up from RM1.3 million disbursed last year.
He added that seven mosques received wakaf funds amounting to RM329,682, 12 surau received RM430,786, and 45 educational institutions received RM1.5 million.
“We received 150 applications, but only 69 institutions were approved after careful consideration.
“However, for next year, we plan to increase the allocation to RM3 million,” he said.
He also advised the public, agencies, or institutions intending to conduct wakaf collections in Selangor to obtain prior authorisation from PWS to prevent misuse of contributions.
Conducting unauthorised wakaf collections could result in legal action against the party, including fines of up to RM1,000.
“We do not want wakaf collections to be misused by individuals or certain parties as it is an offence under the law,” he said.
