Govt gives RM40 mln for KEMAS preschools, childcare centre upgrades

GOPENG, Dec 30 — The Rural and Regional Development Ministry has allocated RM40 million to the Community Development Department (KEMAS) to carry out upgrades and repairs on kindergartens (tabika) and childcare centres (taska) across the nation.

KEMAS director-general Datuk Mohd Hanafiah Man said approximately 60 per cent of the 10,600 kindergartens and childcare centres will be prioritised for immediate maintenance, to address the dilapidated conditions of many premises.

“Priority will be given to older buildings to ensure the safety and well-being of children attending these kindergartens,” he explained. “We want to ensure the facilities are safe, allowing children to pursue their studies without worry.”

Hanafiah further said that all states are currently finalising data on kindergartens in need of upgrades and renovations. “God willing, we anticipate starting the quotation and tender processes for the work by early February,” he said.

He also announced that 17 new kindergartens, including two in Kampar and Tambun, will be constructed next year to meet growing demand.

“The interest from parents … continues to rise. At present, over 20,000 children are on the waitlist to attend KEMAS kindergartens," he said.
