KLANG, Dec 11 — RM1.774 billion has been allocated to mitigate floods in Petaling and Klang, said Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari.

He added that RM1.2 billion has been utilised in Petaling for flood mitigation plans (RTBs) around Sungai Damansara and dual-use catchment pools at Sungai Klang and Sungai Rasau.

The remaining RM574.5 million has been set aside for RTBs in Klang, encompassing works near Sungai Klang, Seksyen 25 in Shah Alam, Sungai Kapar, Sungai Rasah, Pekan Meru and Sungai Rasau.

“This administration receives with an open heart Your Royal Highness’ reprimand, which shows the Sultan’s concern for the people’s welfare so they do not experience the struggles of people in other states.

“I declare a commitment to expedite this (RTB) effort so delays can be avoided, as previously, (delays) occurred frequently due to the culture of working in silos at the agency level,” he said after an investiture ceremony held in conjunction with Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj’s official 79th birthday celebration at Istana Alam Shah here today.

Amirudin said a special team will be established, comprising state and federal agencies and local authorities, to comprehensively study plans and mitigate floods in Selangor.

He emphasised that state leaders, especially executive councillors, should take relevant steps such as river-deepening or drain-widening projects and catchment pools.

The Menteri Besar added that the state administration is set to lower the risk of river pollution by 90 per cent when the Raw Water Security Scheme, involving a cost of RM320 million, is complete.

“I am pleased to say that two of four main packages are complete. The remaining two involve river rerouting work at the pump houses of Sungai Selangor Phases 1, 2 and 3 water treatment plants, set to be completed this month.

“This will make way for testing and accreditation in January,” he said.
