National landscape industry to contribute RM40 bln to GDP by 2035

TAIPING, Dec 10 — The Housing and Local Government Ministry (KPKT) is targeting a RM40 billion contribution to the gross domestic product (GDP) from the landscape industry by 2035 through the National Landscape Policy (DLN) 2.0 launched today.

Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming said the target was set after seeing the current value of the country’s landscape industry, worth RM4 billion.

“If this mission is successful, it can create tens of thousands of job opportunities in the landscape industry. This has indeed become a trend when people buy houses, not just houses, but lifestyles.

“According to the National Housing Department, projects that have open space green gardens, sky parks have always received an encouraging response and are especially equipped with various sports and leisure equipment, all of which are in the landscape industry,” he said.

He said this at a press conference after officiating the Sentuhan Kejayaan KPKT 2024 of the National Landscape Department and the launch of the DLN 2.0 here today.

Nga said this includes the National Landscape Day, which successfully achieved sales of RM5 million in a short period through soft landscape sales

“All of this will provide income to entrepreneurs, nursery industry, seeds, trees and thus increase our country’s GDP. Currently, the landscape industry is only 0.23 per cent of GDP, therefore we are very ambitious because we look at its potential with the hope that by 2035 the landscape industry can contribute 3.5 per cent of GDP,” he said.

DLN 2.0 contains five cores and 18 strategies, as well as 47 action plans that focus on aspects of sustainable landscape development, the development of landscape-related industries, catalysing the well-being of the people and the cultivation of a healthy lifestyle through landscape development.

It is also a long-term plan towards a sustainable Malaysia that sets a mission to ensure comprehensive, quality and comprehensive landscape development through planned governance, strengthening the industrial sector and empowering the balance of biodiversity.
