SHAH ALAM, Dec 6 — The hunt for invasive pleco fish continues this month, with incentives of RM1 per kg of catch, said state executive councillor for infrastructure and agriculture Izham Hashim.
He said the programme, which will run every Saturday and Sunday from tomorrow, will be held at a Sungai Kuyoh tributary near Seri Kembangan.
“This is the state government’s endeavour to maintain sustainability and the ecosystem in our rivers from the ‘colonisation’ of foreign fish,” he said on Facebook today.
In September, the event was held at the Sungai Kebangsaan trail of Sungai Langat, aimed at conserving the river and local species.
The first edition hauled 4,467kg of pleco fish, caught by over 100 of the state’s residents.
This invasive fish is not only a predator, but can weaken riverbanks in which they dig holes to nest.
