Malaysia to leverage role as Asean chair to empower youth, says KBS

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 4 — Malaysia will leverage its role as Asean Chair in 2025 to strengthen the youth agenda.

The Youth and Sports Ministry (KBS) in a statement today said Malaysia has urged Asean to consider the resolutions in the United Nations’ Pact of the Future document for Asean activities and programmes in the coming years.

“The 13th Asean Ministerial Meeting on Youth and Related Meetings, themed ‘Encouraging Youth’s Contribution Towards a Cohesive Society in Asean,’ was held online from November 28 to 30,” said the statement.

Four other meetings were also held — the 13th Asean Senior Officials Meeting on Youth (SOMY XIII) on November 28; the 12th Asean+3 Senior Officials Meeting on Youth on November 29; the 13th Asean Ministerial Meeting on Youth (AMMY XIII) on November 30; and the 9th Asean+3 Ministerial Meeting on Youth, also on November 30.

“Deputy Youth and Sports Minister Adam Adli Abd Halim represented Malaysia at the AMMY XIII on November 30, while KBS deputy secretary-general (strategic) Ramona Mohd Razali attended the senior officials meetings,” the statement read.

KBS said Malaysia has expressed support for the Joint Ministerial Statement of the AMMY XIII, which includes initiatives to empower Asean youth through skills development and employability.

“Malaysia also expressed appreciation for the programmes and activities implemented to promote youth volunteering in Asean and to ensure youth participation in national and regional development,” it said.

The statement said Malaysia also took the opportunity to inform the meeting about its upcoming Asean Chairmanship in 2025 and expressed hope the voice of youth would be further strengthened during that period.

The statement also noted that the SOMY meetings serve as an important platform for advancing youth development agendas in the region.

“Malaysia has expressed hope that all Asean countries will support various youth activities and programmes that will be held in Malaysia in 2025,” it added.
