KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 28 — China Communications Construction (ECRL) Sdn Bhd (CCC-ECRL) launched its first Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Report for 2023 today, showcasing its sustainable initiatives in constructing the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL).
The report highlights efforts taken to minimise ecological impact, integrate railway construction with nature, and promote "green railway" practices while fostering community engagement along the rail alignment.
Speaking at the report launch today, CCC-ECRL managing director Kong Qi reiterated the company’s dedication to embedding ESG principles in its operations.
“Our goal is to create a modern railway that embodies engineering excellence, technical superiority, and the beauty of nature and community life,” he said.
Kong added that the project also focuses on local employment and skills development, with 9,766 Malaysians and over 20,000 foreign workers employed presently.
Additionally, the China-Malaysia Railway Talent Training Programme has trained over 1,400 Malaysians, including 37 assistant train drivers who recently completed a three-week training in China.
CCC-ECRL general manager (Brand Culture) Tian Jufang said ESG remains a core element of the firm’s commitment to sustainable development, contributing to a green Belt and Road initiative.
“We are committed to transitioning from business internationalisation to company internalisation and making positive contributions to global sustainable development,” she said.
The ECRL, connecting Kota Bharu in Kelantan to Gombak, Selangor, is set to be completed by 2026 and operational by January 2027.
The railway is expected to cut travel time between Kota Bharu and the Klang Valley to four hours, compared to over seven hours by road.
