TNB disconnects over 600,000 accounts due to RM1.01 bln in unpaid bills

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 26 — Approximately 627,491 Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) accounts have faced electricity disconnection due to RM1.01 billion in overdue bills, as of September this year.

Energy Transition and Water Transformation Deputy Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir said this marks an increase from last year when 464,076 accounts had RM945.4 million in outstanding payments.

Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Perak, Johor, and Terengganu recorded the highest number of accounts and arrears during this period.

"Delays in payment are often due to financial difficulties, negligence, or irresponsible behaviour. Many accounts are registered under tenants or non-property owners and there is a prevailing attitude of prioritising TNB payments last," he said during the questions for oral answers session in the Dewan Rakyat today.

Akmal was replying to Kota Melaka MP Khoo Poay Tiong's query on the number of electricity disconnection cases by TNB due to unpaid bills and accumulated arrears.

He added that TNB currently serves 10.4 million users, comprising 8.5 million domestic users and 1.9 million non-domestic users.

Under the Electricity Supply Act 1990 and the Licensee Supply Regulations 1990, TNB is authorised to recover unpaid amounts through reminders and discussions with users. If no resolution is reached, disconnection of the electricity supply is carried out as a last resort.
