SHAH ALAM, Nov 18 — The Federal government has allocated RM512 million for the second phase of the Sungai Langat flood mitigation plan (RTB), which is expected to commence next year, said state executive councillor for infrastructure and agriculture Izham Hashim.

During today's Selangor State Legislative Assembly sitting oral question session, he said Selangor has earmarked an additional RM21.5 million for three other RTB projects in the Dusun Tua state constituency.

The initiatives are scheduled to start in the first quarter of 2025, complementing the RM41 million already allocated for Phase One of the Sungai Langat RTB project.

“This major project, which covers the Hulu Langat area, is crucial for mitigating floods. While it is set to begin next year, the state government will continue to implement intervention measures in flood-prone areas, including river deepening initiatives as temporary solutions,” Izham said.

He was responding to Dusun Tua state assemblyman Datuk Johan Abd Aziz’s additional question on what flood mitigation measures projects are due to be implemented in his constituency, which also faces severe flooding.

On October 22, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said the Federal government allocated RM945 million to implement 119 flood mitigation projects for 2024, aiming to reduce the impact of floods and damage to public property.

Of this total, 93 projects are currently underway, and 26 projects are in the pre-implementation stage.

The Energy Transition and Water Transformation Ministry also developed master plans for flood mitigation based on major river basins nationwide as a long-term solution, targeting a comprehensive resolution to the flooding problem.

As of this year, 49 flood mitigation master plans have been completed, seven plans are under development, and three more are scheduled to begin development as early as December, with 26 flood mitigation projects, comprising 17 structural projects and nine non-structural projects completed from 2020 to 2023.

First announced during the tabling of the Federal Budget 2024 on October 13 last year, the Sungai Langat 2 RTB is part of the overall RM11.8 billion allocated for flood mitigation efforts nationwide.

On November 21, 2023, Izham said the state government had allocated RM650 million for the Sungai Langat 2 RTB, with the aim of resolving floods in Dengkil and Labohan Dagang in Sepang.
