SHAH ALAM, Oct 22 — Petaling Jaya MP Lee Chean Chung has called for the expansion of Rapid KL’s exclusive bus lanes into the city, following their success in easing traffic congestion in Kuala Lumpur.
Lee pointed out that Petaling Jaya faces similar traffic challenges as the capital, and that developing dedicated bus lanes is a necessary solution to improve the city’s public transport system.
“Implementing a system similar to KL’s exclusive bus lanes could significantly enhance connectivity to key transport hubs while reducing commute times,” he said in a statement today.
This follows a report by English daily The Star earlier today that the introduction of Kuala Lumpur’s bus lanes have grown ridership by 12 to 50 per cent and reduced travel time by 10 per cent, demonstrating their effectiveness.
Following the success, Rapid Bus Sdn Bhd had said that it plans to expand the project to four more major roads in the capital in a trial that will later include Penang.
Lee said close collaboration between Rapid KL and Petaling Jaya authorities is essential, particularly in tackling first-mile and last-mile connectivity issues.
He added that the seamless integration of services between Kuala Lumpur and Petaling Jaya will encourage greater use of public transport if overall travel times can be reduced.
