SHAH ALAM, Oct 19 — The state government has allocated RM1.5 million in incentives to athletes and officials who brought pride to Selangor at the 2024 Malaysian Games (Sukma) in Sarawak in August.
The aquatics team, which contributed 13 gold, 19 silver and seven bronze medals, received the largest chunk, RM322,900, of the amount.
The incentives were presented to athletes by Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari, accompanied by state executive councillor for youth, sports and entrepreneurship Mohd Najwan Halimi.
Speaking after the ceremony, Amirudin said the incentive is not just a reward, but a key element of a long-established ecosystem aimed at nurturing sports excellence.
“This year, we increased the amount, and it has clearly motivated the team and athletes. We are four medals short, and despite a late start, we were close to achieving our target of 60 golds.
“We brought back a lot of silvers, and if they were converted to gold, I believe we can take up the challenge to become overall champion. This is something the management must address and prepare for from now,” he said.
The 21st Sukma, held in Sarawak from August 17 to 24, saw Selangor finish in third place overall with 56 gold, 64 silver and 61 bronze.
The 2023 Selangor Sports Awards was held at the same event, where tenpin bowling world champion Natasha Roslan was named Sportswoman, whereas world tower run champion Soh Wai Ching was named Sportsman.
Meanwhile, Amirudin said Selangor’s preparations as Sukma 2026 host will cover various elements to ensure the event is executed successfully.
He said this includes assets, personnel on duty, and volunteers for the 22nd edition of the games.
“The proposal was submitted to the Selangor Sports Council to assess costs and management.
“Organising Sukma involves many elements beyond just the use of assets and facilities; we also require officials to serve as judges and referees, expertise from associations, and volunteers.
“We estimate needing at least 7,000 volunteers to ensure the event runs smoothly and efficiently,” he said.
