SHAH ALAM, Oct 18 — The Federal government will immediately allocate RM150 million to critical local councils and the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (JPS) to address flood incidents in affected cities and towns throughout Malaysia.
During the tabling of Budget 2025 in the Dewan Rakyat today, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the funds would be used to clean drainage systems and deepen rivers in critical areas to mitigate flood risks.
He also announced an additional RM50 million, which will be made available to the local authorities to upgrade their drainage systems.
Furthermore, RM600 million will be allocated to the National Disaster Management Agency for flood-related incidents in the coming year.
This includes RM300 million specifically for handling natural disasters.
In addition, a RM20 million grant will be provided to government bodies to facilitate aid distribution to victims of natural disasters.
Anwar revealed that, to date, the government has completed eight flood mitigation projects worth RM540 million, with 12 more projects valued at RM3 billion currently underway.
Among these projects is the flood mitigation effort along Sungai Damansara in Selangor.
