Selangor activates 24-hour monitoring for floods, high tide

By Fitri Hazim Hazam

AMPANG JAYA, Oct 16 — The state government has launched round-the-clock monitoring in all districts to keep a close watch on flood-prone areas and the high-tide phenomenon.

Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said this is to ensure swift response by the Smart Selangor Operation Centre in the event of disasters.

He added that temporary embankments are being constructed at several critical locations in preparation for the high-tide phenomenon, which starts tomorrow and lasts till Sunday.

“Several temporary embankments are under construction following the decision made by the Selangor Economic Action Council last month.

“This afternoon, I will be inspecting the level of preparedness, and if there are any unfinished embankments, orders will be issued to expedite their completion immediately,” he told reporters after inspecting the landslide site at Jalan E6, Taman Melawati here today.

On the flash flood in Hulu Langat, Amirudin said most victims have gone home.

“Most flash floods that occurred in several areas yesterday only lasted about three or four hours; they were not stagnant floodwaters.”

He said flash floods in Kuala Lumpur yesterday resulted in water flowing into some parts of Selangor.

“The state will monitor the situation closely and assess if there is a need to relocate residents to relief centres.”
