Eligibility criteria for B1-B2 motorcycle licence upgrade relaxed

PUTRAJAYA, Oct 2 — The eligibility criteria for the Malaysian Driving Licence (LMM) Special Transition Programme for motorcyclists from class B1 and B2 to class B (high-powered motorcycles), which began yesterday, have been relaxed following public complaints.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook said one of the original conditions required individuals to hold an active LMM class B1 or B2 licence for at least 10 consecutive years.

After considering public feedback, the matter was discussed with the Road Transport Department director-general Aedy Fadly Ramli, who agreed to ease the requirement.

“The condition has been relaxed with immediate effect, so now the LMM need only have been active for 10 years or more, without requiring those years to be consecutive,” he said at a press conference today.

He said one of the reasons cited by the public was reasonable, which was that they could not renew their licences during the 2020 movement control order.

The government exempted licence holders from renewing their LMM during the MCO.

However, other conditions remain, including the requirement that applicants must not be on any blacklist or have outstanding summonses.

Loke added that updates will be made to ensure more applicants qualify and benefit from the programme.

“We are implementing this system change immediately to make it easier for the public. We ask for patience, and within a few days, applicants can participate in the programme at driving institutes involved,” he said.
