KLUANG, Sept 28 — The voting process for the Mahkota state constituency's by-election concluded after all 20 polling stations, which had been open since 8am, officially closed at 6pm.
After the stations closed, the vote-counting process began at the polling centres, before the ballot papers were brought to the official tallying centre at Dewan Tunku Ibrahim Ismail.
According to data from the Election Commission (EC), 61,274 eligible voters cast their votes today, while early voting took place on Tuesday (September 24), with postal ballots issued on Saturday (September 15)
In total, the Mahkota seat has 66,318 voters, the majority of whom are Malays, comprising 56 per cent, with Chinese voters making up 34 per cent, Indian voters eight per cent, and the remainder being other ethnicities.
In a statement, the EC said that as of 4pm, 47.16 per cent of voters had fulfilled their responsibility to cast their ballots.
The weather in the Kluang town was fine in the morning, but heavy rain occurred in the afternoon, in line with the forecast by the Malaysian Meteorological Department.
The Mahkota by-election, within the Kluang Parliamentary constituency, sees a contest between Barisan Nasional candidate Syed Hussien Syed Abdullah and Perikatan Nasional candidate Mohamad Haizan Jaafar.
The by-election was held following the death of its incumbent state assemblyman Datuk Sharifah Azizah Syed Zain, 63, on August 2.
