Petronas gains licence to explore oil, gas in Abu Dhabi

MOSCOW, Sept 27 — The Abu Dhabi Supreme Council for Financial and Economic Affairs has agreed to grant Petronas an exploration licence in the Al Dhafra region in the west of the emirate, reported Sputnik, quoting the Abu Dhabi Media Office.

“The Supreme Council for Financial and Economic Affairs has granted a new oil and gas exploration concession in Onshore Block 2, located within the Al Dhafra region of Abu Dhabi, to Petroliam Nasional Bhd, the Malaysian national oil and gas company,” the agency said in a statement yesterday.

This licence is the third “exploration concession awarded to Petronas”, the statement added. The area of Onshore Block 2 is 7,320sq km. Advanced technologies and artificial intelligence solutions will reportedly be used in the exploration, the statement read.

In a statement from Petronas, it said: “(This) is Petronas Abu Dhabi’s third concession, following the Unconventional Block 5 in 2024 and the Unconventional Block 1 in 2022,” it said.

Petronas executive vice-president and upstream business chief executive officer Mohd Jukris Abdul Wahab said the SCFEA collaboration broadens the company’s Abu Dhabi upstream portfolio.

“It incorporates both unconventional and conventional resources, offering potential for exploration growth,” he said.

Petronas said that as a Malaysian oil firm with a global presence, it is committed to balancing domestic obligations while seizing international opportunities, maintaining a robust business portfolio amidst the evolving energy landscape.

Aligned with the firm’s net-zero targets, Petronas Abu Dhabi remains committed to exploring a sustainable approach for its operations, the Petronas statement said.
