KUCHING, Sept 22 — Selangor swimmers have set their sights on improving upon their previous haul of 14 gold medals at the previous Para Malaysian Games (Para Sukma), with a target of 15 gold medals this year in Sarawak.
Team manager Intan Diana Mohd Baki is confident despite introducing 11 new swimmers out of the 16-person squad, Selangor can achieve their ambitious target.
“We had some classification changes today for a few of our swimmers, but judging from the competition, I believe we can still bring home those golds.
“The most important thing is for them to hit their personal bests. I don’t want them to feel the pressure; we’ve prepared thoroughly with training camps, intensive sessions and specialised programmes,” she told Bernama during the classification session at the Pandelela Rinong Aquatic Centre here.
However, Intan did express disappointment over the decision to drop four events from the competition, events considered Selangor’s gold-medal strongholds.
“Sarawak will be fielding a large number of athletes on their home turf, which makes it more challenging in our pursuit of the top spot,” she added.
