KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 20 — The Foreign Affairs Ministry (Wisma Putra) has confirmed that two Malaysian citizens were released today following an order by the Bangladeshi Court after completing their sentences for smuggling gold into the country.
“They are expected to return to Malaysia soon,” it said in a statement today.
Wisma Putra, via the High Commission of Malaysia in Dhaka, had actively provided consular assistance to both of them throughout their detention.
“The High Commission of Malaysia will continue to assist Malaysians who require consular assistance,” it said.
Wisma Putra reminded all Malaysians that gold smuggling is a serious crime in Bangladesh and can carry the death penalty.
“As such, the ministry urges all Malaysians to respect local laws and regulations and refrain from engaging in any illegal activities while travelling abroad,” it said.
