SHAH ALAM, Sept 20 — A special committee has been tasked with enhancing the guidelines for welfare homes in Selangor, with a particular focus on facilities for people with disabilities (OKU), the elderly and orphans.
State executive councillor for women empowerment and welfare Anfaal Saari said the committee, chaired by Subang Jaya assemblyman Michelle Ng Mei Sze, includes representatives from local councils, the State Economic Planning Unit (Upen), and the Social Welfare Department legal division.
Anfaal added that the committee is, among other things, reviewing a proposal to establish a bylaw for care centre services, which would be enforced by local authorities.
"Previously, the committee focused on studies at the nursery level, but we believe it should be expanded to include welfare homes.
“This committee also aims to address issues such as financial challenges and technical matters related to the development of welfare homes.
"In addition, the committee will review a proposal for a special enactment requiring every shelter to have a minimum of four residents," she told Media Selangor.
She said the issue of child exploitation linked to Global Ikhwan Services and Business (GISB) Holdings has highlighted the urgent need to reform the system in managing welfare homes.
"God willing, Selangor will enhance the guidelines for welfare homes. The first meeting took place in August, and the next one is scheduled for October," she said.
