SEA Games 2027 to cost RM700 mln — Hannah Yeoh

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 29 — Penang, Sabah and Sarawak have agreed to co-host with Kuala Lumpur in organising the 2027 SEA Games.

Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh said the three states agreed to bear the total organisation cost, estimated at RM700 million.

“This estimate is based on the cost when we organised the 2017 SEA Games. This time, we also received an allocation … from the state governments so the federal government does not bear too much… That is why the Cabinet agreed to organise the SEA Games.

“Sarawak agreed to cover 50 per cent of organising costs, which is more than RM300 million, Sabah (agreed to bear) RM100 million, and Penang RM15 million,” she told reporters after the Tenaga Malaysia Energy Literacy Programme with sports industry activists at the National Sports Council here today.

Yesterday, the Youth and Sports Ministry (KBS) announced Malaysia had accepted an offer from the Southeast Asian Games Federation to host the 2027 edition.

KBS said the decision was made by the Cabinet in a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, after taking into account the joint hosting commitment by Sarawak, Sabah and Penang.

Yeoh said KBS received offers from several other states to be co-organisers, but rejected them as they did not want to share the cost of holding the biennial event.
