SHAH ALAM, Aug 24 — This afternoon sees the state take home a gold medal in chess, and five bronze medals in badminton, sailing, gymnastics, and table tennis.
Rohan Tze Navaratnam Shan, Lik Zang Lye, Mukhriez Shah Mahmood Shah, and Ree Herng Shen won gold in the men's standard event at Dewan Jubli UiTM in Kota Samarahan.
Lik and Rohan had earlier scored gold and silver respectively in the standard individual event at the same venue.
Meanwhile, M. Haris Sufian and Wong Zi Yi earned bronze in the mixed doubles at the Sibu Indoor Stadium in Sibu, facing off against Sarawak's Jeremy Juan Zhen Liang and Genevie Lim Tsin Yeen.
In sailing, Ummu Nurdania Rozaini and Nurul Izzryn Shamsul Ariffin won bronze in the women's international 420 event at Marina Bay in Miri, with Sabah and Sarawak winning silver and gold respectively.
For gymnastics, Mann Ming Chong was awarded bronze in the men's parallel bars event at the Serian Conference Centre in Serian, while his compatriot Cadence Zi Qi Teh also took home bronze in the women's floor exercise event at the same venue.
In table tennis, Hong Yu Tey won bronze in his match against Penang's Yong Han Lai at SJK(C) Chung Hua in Sibu.
Earlier today, local shuttlers Lok Hong Quan and Muhammad Faiq Haziq Masawi took home gold after their match against Penang's Goh Boon Zhe and Rayner Beh Chun Meng at the Sibu Indoor Stadium in Sibu.
Lik Zang Lye made Selangor proud when he won gold in the standard individual event for chess at Dewan Jubli UiTM in Kota Samarahan.
Meanwhile, his compatriots Rohan Tze Navaratnam Shan and M. Kavin each won silver in the standard individual event and the blitz individual event respectively, at the same venue and time.
Kavin also won silver in the men's rapid event together with Uzair Shahar, while Aliah Diyanah Insyirah Mohd Faizullah and Ava Arabella Sheikh Abdullah Munshee earned bronze in the women's rapid event.
Elsewhere, the women's cricket team won silver in their match against Terengganu at the Petra Jaya Cricket and Rugby field in Kuching.
Shuttler Chua Kim Sheng won bronze in his match against the Federal Territories' Hooi Shao Herng at the Sibu Indoor Stadium in Sibu.
K. Letshanaa, scheduled to face fellow compatriot Siti Nurshuhaini Azman at the same venue and time, won the bronze medal by default when the latter was forced to retire due to an injury.
At the start of the day, Selangor's contingent to the biennial national multi-sport event remains optimistic about surpassing their already-considerable medals haul for the 2024 edition.
As it stands, Selangor has 170 medals: 53 gold, 64 silver, and 53 bronze. This puts them in third place behind the Federal Territories with 72 gold, 65 silver, and 71 bronze, and Sarawak with 73 gold, 53 silver, and 67 bronze.
Yesterday's highlights include the men's and women's relay teams winning two golds for the state in the 4x100m events at Stadium Sarawak in Petra Jaya, Kuching.
Basketball saw two medals: one by the women’s 3×3 team and the men’s 3×3 team, with both matches against Johor at Stadium MBKS in Kuching.
Weightlifting saw Nur Ellyana Maisarah Norazman win gold in the women’s under-76kg category at Dewan Sukan Tan Sri Datuk Amar Stephen Kalong Ningkan in Betong.
The state also won gold when the women’s football team defeated Sabah 3-1 at Stadium Negeri in Kuching.
The final victory of the day came from the aquatic sports men’s team, who took home gold in the 4x100m medley relay event at the Pandelela Rinong Aquatic Centre in Petra Jaya, Kuching.
With the Sukma 2024 closing ceremony to take place this evening, Selangor has garnered medals in a number of events, including archery, aquatic sports, bowling, decathlon, fencing, football, futsal, golf, karate, lawn bowls, pencak silat, petanque, silambam, sprinting, swimming, tenpin bowling, weightlifting, and wushu.
