KUCHING, Aug 23 — Selangor broke the hearts of Sarawak fans when they defeated the home team 2-0 to clinch the 2024 Malaysia Games (Sukma) men’s futsal gold medal at the Kota Samarahan Indoor Stadium today.
This is the first time that Selangor have won the gold medal since futsal was introduced in Sukma during the 2014 edition in Perlis.
Despite playing the final in front of thousands of Sarawak fans, Selangor were never rattled and coach Qusmani Rusli’s men even stunned the home team as early as in the first minute when Zulkifli Abu Hassan Zali opened the scoring.
Sarawak, under the guidance of Faizal Zamri, tightened their game and stepped up a gear in search of the equaliser but Selangor continued to maintain their intensity to foil the home team.
Just when it looked like the score would remain at 1-0, Selangor pounced on a mistake late in the game when Muhamad Syauki Ahmad Puad intercepted a pass and let fly a solid shot to give his team a 2-0 win and seal their grip on the gold medal.
As Sarawak settled for silver, Perak downed Penang 5-3 to take home the bronze.
For the record, futsal was last contested in Sukma in the 2018 edition in Perak.
