KUCHING, Aug 19 — Selangor swimmer Andrew Goh Zheng Yeng said strategies and techniques he discussed with his coach before joining the Malaysian Games (Sukma) bore fruit when he smashed the national men’s 100m breaststroke record.

The 20-year-old clocked 1:01.39s at the Pandelela Rinong Aquatics Centre, Petra Jaya, here today to clinch gold and break his own Malaysian Open record of 1:02.30s.

Andrew said his victory would have been impossible without the guidance of national and state squad coach Eric Anderson, as well as his family and the people of Selangor.

“I trained hard with him (Eric) and thought of and planned swimming techniques before Sukma began. I wanted to see which aspects to focus on.

“When I entered this pool, I was confident everything would go well. I am very proud and happy with this result,” he said, dedicating the medal to Eric and Selangor.

Andrew added that his road will not end at Sukma, as he will start preparing for the World Aquatics Championships and SEA Games next year, with hopes of renewing his record.

“I will continue training and preparing by taking motivation from the victory I earned here,” he said.

In the same event, Federal Territories athlete Cham Yu Xiang scored silver by clocking 1:04.55s, while bronze went to Sabah swimmer Emmanuel Loh, with a time of 1:04.98s.
