KUCHING, Aug 18 — Petanque athlete Ayzek Hakimi Safingan has resolved to fix his mistakes and do his best at the 2024 Malaysian Games (Sukma) men’s singles event after he failed to earn Selangor a gold medal at the shooting event today.
The 21-year-old admitted to errors in the final moments of the event at the Sarawak Petanque Centre here today, which gave his competitor an advantage.
“I apologise to the people of Selangor for not being able to perform well in the shooting final. It is a little disappointing to lose to the same opponent as the last Sukma final.
“I hope I can fix my mistakes for the next event and do my best. I will redeem myself in the singles event to earn gold,” he told Media Selangor.
Earlier, the Hanoi SEA Games triple-bronze winner had to settle for silver when he was defeated 28-37 by Melaka’s Khairul Amirul Zamrul Hisham.
Meanwhile, Selangor petanque coach Saiful Bahri Musmin said he would not pressure his charge, but hopes Ayzek enters the singles final and wins gold.
Saiful, who has only been mentoring Ayzek for a few months, said the athlete must win three out of four qualifying stages to enter the next round.
“For the singles event, I hope he does his best and avoids mistakes. It is highly important to focus on (each step) to enter the semi final and the final to win gold,” he said.
