KUCHING, Aug 18 — Selangor’s aim for a top three finish in the 2024 Malaysian Games (Sukma) can be achieved with the hard work and performance athletes have displayed so far.
State executive councillor for youth, sports and entrepreneurship Mohd Najwan Halimi said many of Selangor’s gold-targeted events will take place in the few days before the biennial sporting event ends.
“The real result cannot be seen as of yet. God willing, from tomorrow, there will be events in aquatics and athletics, in which we are targeting gold medals to add to our collection.
“May the athletes be able to step up and deliver better performances throughout this week. We will maintain positive mindsets and are optimistic about our 61-gold target,” he said today when met after the golf finals at Kelab Golf Sarawak here.
Najwan also praised athletes for their determination in chasing medals, even though gold was missed in several gold-targeted events.
“Our athletes’ performance has been very good, but in some events in which we had high potential for gold, we earned silver instead. (But) I appreciate their effort to earn as many medals as they can,” he said.
Najwan added that Sarawak, as the host, has shown excellent hospitality towards all contingents, with no complaints so far.
Selangor has joined 37 events in the prestigious national games, with an aim of collecting 61 gold medals and finishing in the top three.
As at 10pm, according to the Sukma website, Selangor is in ninth place with five gold, 13 silver and seven bronze.
