Law to be drafted to fine men trespassing on women’s coaches

PUTRAJAYA, Aug 14 — The government is drafting a law to fine men who trespass on coaches reserved for women on public transport.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook said commuter service operators Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd and Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) were asked to step up monitoring of women’s coaches.

He said auxiliary police at railway and MRT stations have been mobilised more often to ensure men do not encroach on women’s coaches, and action has been taken from time to time.

“In terms of regulations, we are drafting a form of fine that we can impose. Right now there is no rule that we can fine men who ignore designated women’s coaches,” he said in a press conference here today.

Loke said men should respect the exclusive women’s coaches for the safety, comfort and confidence of female public transport passengers.

Recently, a viral video on social media showed a man scolding a woman who reprimanded him for being in a coach reserved for women.

Women’s coaches are frequently breached by male passengers, with some cases even resulting in arguments and molestation.
