Nomination for Nenggiri by-election tomorrow

GUA MUSANG, Aug 2 — The Nenggiri by-election will kick off tomorrow with nominations at the Gua Musang District Council here.

Potential candidates are given from 9am to 10am to submit their nomination forms before the list of those contesting is announced by the returning officer.

Once nominations are over, candidates have 14 days to campaign in the constituency, which is one of three state seats in the Gua Musang parliamentary constituency.

The Election Commission (EC) set voting day for August 17, while there will not be early voting as the 14 electors involved opted to ballot by post.

According to the EC, 20,259 registered voters are eligible to vote in the by-election, comprising 20,245 ordinary voters and 14 policemen.

The Meteorological Department website said weather tomorrow is expected to be fair.

Meanwhile, Kelantan police chief Datuk Muhamad Zaki Harun in a statement said three main roads in the district will be closed from 7am to 12pm tomorrow — Jalan Persiaran Raya from the Mahkota Intersection traffic light, to the Bendahara Intersection traffic light Kuala Lumpur-Kota Bharu route.

The Nenggiri by-election is the first one after the state polls.

It was held after the seat was declared vacant by Kelantan Speaker Datuk Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah on June 19.

The Nenggiri seat was previously held by Mohd Azizi Abu Naim of Bersatu, but his membership was revoked on June 13.

Barisan Nasional named Kelantan Umno Youth chief Mohd Azmawi Fikri Abdul Ghani, 38, as Unity Government candidate, while Perikatan Nasional will nominate Mohd Rizwadi Ismail, 41, a former navy personnel.
