SEPANG, Aug 1 — Approximately 1,182 athletes will represent Selangor at the 21st Malaysia Games (Sukma) in Sarawak from August 17 to August 24, said state executive councillor for youth, sports, and entrepreneurship Mohd Najwan Halimi.
He said the officials will depart for Sarawak on Tuesday (August 6) to handle logistical preparations and ensure the athletes' safety.
“All the names of the athletes representing Selangor have been finalised and are in the final stages of coordination. A total of 1,182 athletes and officials will be in Sarawak for this Sukma.
“The officials will depart early to ensure everything is in good order, including the athletes' safety,” he said during the launch of the third series of the Selangor 1000 Digital programme for the Sepang district at Dewan Semarak in Cyberjaya yesterday.
Najwan added that the athletes also received sponsorships and financial assistance from the association’s patrons in preparation for Sukma.
For the games, Selangor is targeting 61 gold medals and is confident of securing a top-three position.
The state won the sporting event in Sarawak in 2016, and under the 2024 Selangor Budget, the state government has allocated RM8 million to prepare the state contingent for the biennial games.
