SUNGKAI, July 28 — The Higher Education Ministry (Mohe) said it is monitoring the safety of Malaysian students in Bangladesh, with Wisma Putra.
Minister Datuk Seri Zambry Abdul Kadir said according to Wisma Putra, about 40 university students are among Malaysians remaining in Bangladesh.
“I understand that (Malaysians) in Bangladesh include some working in specific sectors, not many, but they are professionals.
“There are also students who feel they are not disturbed by the situation there, but their numbers are small,” he told reporters after launching the Umno Tanjung Malim division meeting here today.
Thousands of Bangladeshi students have been demonstrating since July 1 following a court decision to reinstate public sector job quotas abolished in 2018.
On July 23, 123 Malaysians, including 80 students, were brought home from Bangladesh on a special flight on Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s order.
Meanwhile, Zambry said he has instructed the Mohe to consider the next steps for students who have returned to Malaysia.
In another development, he said the ministry views the issue of bullying in higher learning institutions seriously, and has instructed the Student Affairs and Alumni division of each university to take preventive measures.
