Malaysia urges Asean dialogue partners to support Gaza ceasefire

VIENTIANE, July 26 — Malaysia has urged dialogue partners attending the Asean Post-Ministerial Conference in Laos to support a ceasefire in Gaza and end the brutal killings of Palestinians.

Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said Malaysia, along with Indonesia and Brunei, brought forward this motion during today's meeting at the National Convention Centre.

"We urge our dialogue partners to ensure that Israel complies with the decisions of the International Court of Justice where the resolution that has been decided is resolution 2375 of the United Nations Security Council regarding the situation in Gaza," he told the Malaysian press.

Malaysia also urged the dialogue partners to support the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.

The country also appreciates the role played by Russia, noting its status as an Asean dialogue partner and a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council.

"I have discussed with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and value Russia's role as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, which has firmly supported the Palestinian cause," Mohamad said.

He added that Russia could play a role in advancing the agenda to assist the Palestinian people.

The minister also informed Lavrov that Malaysia hopes Russia will continue its role in the Gaza ceasefire efforts.

In his meeting with Turkish counterpart Hakan Fidan, Mohamad emphasised that both Malaysia and Turkey seek an immediate halt to the mass killings of Palestinians.

"Turkey wants Islamic countries to work more closely together to pressure Israel to stop its atrocities against Palestinians," he said.

On the third day of the 57th Asean Foreign Ministers' Meeting and related meetings, Mohamad held dialogues with 10 Asean dialogue partners at the Post-Ministerial Conference.

In addition to Lavrov and Fidan, dialogue partners included United Kingdom Foreign Secretary David Lammy, Norway Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide, and European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell-Fontelles.
