SEPANG, July 26 — The Sepang Municipal Council (MPSepang) has been cutting and pruning 940 trees in three zones within its jurisdiction, which have been identified as high-risk, since February this year.
Its President Datuk Abd Hamid Hussain said the three zones requiring immediate action are Cyberjaya (390), North (Puchong) (448), and South (Sepang Putra) (102). All the trees in the zones are of the dry zone mahogany (Khaya) variant.
“So far, 40 per cent of the works have been carried out, and is expected to be fully completed by December. All these trees need to be pruned as most are over 20 years old and pose a risk (to the public).
“The implementation cost is quite high, with cutting work estimated at RM8,000 to RM10,000 per tree, while pruning costs RM3,000 to RM5,000,” he said.
Previously, unpredictable weather conditions resulted in incidents of fallen trees in several areas, including in Kuala Lumpur, where a driver was killed on May 7.
Separately, Hamid said the Automatic Drive-Through Recycling Centre (ADTReC), which was launched in March, has received a good response from residents, with nearly 6,000 tonnes collected as of June.
To this end, MPSepang will enhance recycling campaigns at schools and strata residences, including establishing an education unit managed by the corporate unit early next year.
“We are also introducing the reverse vending machine (RVM) recycling machine, placed at the council's headquarters to encourage recycling among staff and members of the public coming in to conduct their transactions,” he said.
