Govt disburses nearly RM1 bln in MySalam claims

KUALA LUMPUR, July 24 — The government has paid RM936.12 million in claims under the MySalam scheme from 2019 to 2023, said the Finance Ministry.

Deputy Finance Minister Lim Hui Ying said this amount was given to 1.27 million beneficiaries, including those in the B40 community aged between 18 and 65, who are Rahmah Cash Aid recipients.

She said the claims included costs for hospitalisation, critical illness, patients under investigation, and Covid-19, as well as medical devices.

The highest claims payment of RM382 million was in 2022, which benefited 650,000 beneficiaries, followed by RM246.72 million in 2021 for 365,000 beneficiaries, she told the Dewan Negara today.

She was replying to Senator Dr R.A. Lingeshwaran’s supplementary question about the amount of compensation paid by the government.

Lim said 10.92 million Malaysians in the B40 group are eligible for MySalam benefits this year.

“Selangor has the highest number of eligible recipients at 1.48 million, followed by Johor at 1.34 million, Sarawak at 1.13 million, and Kelantan at 825,000,” she added.

Meanwhile, Lim said, the average number of taxpayers claiming tax deductions for life insurance premiums from 2019 to 2023 was at 2.14 million per year.

She said the deductions amount to annual tax savings of RM635 million.

The average number of taxpayers who claimed tax deductions for education and medical insurance premiums in the same period was two million a year, for a total tax payment savings of RM611 million a year, she said.

Lim was replying to Senator Datuk Seri Zurainah Musa’s question about the number of people who enjoy medical and life insurance tax relief.
