Water cut: Supply recovery at 14.3 pct

By Selangor Journal Team

SHAH ALAM, July 24 — Areas affected by an unscheduled water cut due to odour pollution have had their supply recover by 14.3 per cent as at 9am today, said Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Air Selangor).

The state water services provider said the four water treatment plants (WTPs) involved are back in operation, and they have resumed distributing safe treated water to consumers in stages.

Air Selangor said water recovery is expected to reach 40 per cent by 8am tomorrow and 90 per cent by 8pm.

Full supply recovery is anticipated by 8am on Friday.

“The time of supply recovery in affected areas will vary depending on the location of consumers’ premises and water pressure at the distribution system.”

In its latest update, Air Selangor advised consumers not to be alarmed if the water flowing from their taps is discoloured, explaining that this is common after disruptions as sediment settles in dry pipes and mixes with the fresh water supply.

“Consumers who see discoloured water are advised to run the tap for five to 10 minutes until water is clear, before consumption. If the water remains discoloured, please contact Air Selangor for inspection and follow-up.”

Air Selangor said it has mobilised water tankers to critical premises such as hospitals, clinics, dialysis centres and funeral service centres during the supply disruption, and that alternative water aid has been prepared at 17 local service centres.

Yesterday, it was reported that seven areas in the Klang Valley — Petaling, Klang, Shah Alam, Gombak, Kuala Lumpur, Hulu Selangor and Kuala Selangor — would experience an unscheduled water cut.

This came after the temporary shutdown of four WTPs — Rantau Panjang and Sungai Selangor Phases 1, 2 and 3 — following odour pollution detected at Sungai Kundang and Sungai Sembah.

State executive councillor for infrastructure and agriculture Izham Hashim similarly said last night that the water cut would be fully resolved by Friday.

He said supply would begin being restored by as early as 8am today, following the full operating resumption of all WTPs involved.
