MOHR says Malaysian foreign labour market not affected by Bangladesh riots

SHAH ALAM, July 22 — The situation in Bangladesh has not affected the foreign labour market in Malaysia, said Deputy Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Rahman Mohamad.

He said this is as the current number of foreign workers in the country is sufficient, and that there is no need for the government to open entry to more foreign workers, including from Bangladesh.

“For the time being, we are not taking any more foreign workers...because we have enough.

“...the ones needed are only in a few sectors, like cooks and tailors… We have no problem in those areas,” he said when met after launching the Madani Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Convoy 2024 here today.

It was reported that thousands of students in Bangladesh have held demonstrations since July 1 after the country’s top court reinstated quotas for public jobs that had been abolished in 2018.

Meanwhile, Rahman said the Madani TVET Convoy began at the Centre for Instructor and Advanced Skill Training here, and that the 170 participants on motorcycles will travel to several education institutions in Pahang and Terengganu to promote TVET to youth in the two states.

The deputy minister expressed confidence the initiative can enhance public trust in TVET in line with the government’s aspiration to make TVET an option among school leavers.

“We hope that through this convoy, we can draw into TVET, which can be a boon for them to earn a higher income after entering the job market,” he said.
