SHAH ALAM, July 19 — Selangor is strengthening cooperation with various quarters to address women's issues, including safety protection and the empowerment of the family institution.
State executive councillor for women's development and welfare Anfaal Saari said this includes holding a roundtable conference with the Selangor Syariah Judicial Department (Jakess) regarding current issues faced by women.
“Family empowerment will be one of my focuses in 2025, along with women’s safety and preventing gender-based violence.
“Another emphasis is on how men, as protectors or heads of the family, should protect the women in their families, as it is akin to protecting the entire community,” she said.
Anfaal was speaking to the press after officiating the Selangor Young Women Entrepreneur (Usahawanita) Icon’s Digital Media Incentive Programme Awards today.
During the event, she presented the 2024 Usahawanita Icon’s Award to BNG Homeware Hub founder Nooraihan Che Li, who took home a RM4,000 cash prize and a trophy.
The councillor added that Usahawanita, an initiative by the Women's Empowerment Standing Committee, encompasses four phases, including basic training, advanced training, practicals, and competitions, with 302 entries received.
Separately, Anfaal urged parents or anyone who loses a family member to immediately file a police report without waiting for 24 hours as per usual practice.
“I have read the police statement that if a person is missing for less than 24 hours, it can actually be reported.
"So, it is better to do so, by being preventative rather than to follow a myth or common practice,” she said.
Yesterday, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain said the public does not need to wait 24 hours to report the disappearance of a family member or acquaintance.
He clarified that this claim is a myth often spread by many parties without any basis.
